How to Raise a Good Reader
Here are a few great hints from the August issue of Good Housekeeping magazine. To raise a good reader, keep reading together, even if your child can breeze through a book. Reading aloud expands vocabulary, increases comprehension and increases appreciation of the written word. While you might be tempted to push your child, stick with books on her level. Your shared goal should be to understand and enjoy the book. Another great hint is to put away the hand held computer games and listen to audio books while traveling. The library should be able to satisfy your young reader with many audio selections.Revisit favorite books again and again. If children can watch the same movie repeatedly (and they do!), they should give as much pleasure from rereading books. The final hint is to catch out bookadventure.com; it matches kids with books they will enjoy. Enjoy reading with your child over the summer and make some wonderful memories!
'If a child is given love, he becomes loving...If he's helped when he needs help, he becomes helpful. And if he has been truly valued at home...he grows up secure enough to look beyond himself to the welfare of others.' A wonderful quote from Dr. Joyce Brothers
